JAMBOREE: OBSERVE - THINK - DO

On the 5th July 2019 – 7th July 2019, the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation will host over 800 South African youth at its National Jamboree which squarely focuses on unlocking the power of its programmes’ community. The objective of the event is to bring entrepreneurship into action in order to enable participants to continuously create value and effect change within their spaces. Over the course of the three days, Masterclasses will be hosted, exhibitors will educate and pitches will be conducted all in the spirit of sharing a collaborating idea’s. Further, a process of Open Space Technology is used to maximise the sharing of entrepreneurial ideas in a way that catalyses passion and promotes action. This year’s theme titled “Ideas Can Change the World,” will encourage participants to start where they are, with what they have by applying an entrepreneurial mindset. We will be unpacking how “Ideas Can Change the world – Building Economies on Innovation.”

Suzie Nkambule was born in a small township in Matsulu, Mpumalanga – and started her journey as a Candidate Fellow in 2005. She graduated from the University of Wits Waters rand as a Civil Engineer in 2009 and was formally inducted as a Fellow. Today Suzie is the CEO Aveng Water, Infinity Partners Investments, and is renowned as an inspiring and passionate motivational speaker at events all over South Africa.

Malik Fal is the founder of Filao Capital Partners, and Managing Director of Filao Capital Partners Johannesburg. He has also served in various Pan African roles at Microsoft (Head of Africa Operations), and Endeavor (Managing Director; South Africa). Malik was educated in Europe and the United States, and has a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard University.

Obenewa Amponsah

Yannick Nzonde is the Founder and CEO of Mulundu Investments and Holdings (MIH), a leading business consulting firm, with an annual multimillions dollar turnover and which specialises in agriculture, energy, telecommunications and mining. He holds a degree in accounting and a PGDip from the UCT Graduate School of Business. He has founded two other companies named Chi Groupe and Fleurette Consulting Group which fall under MIH. An astute consultant and forward thinker, he is passionate about Africa’s development and solving company challenges. He believes that innovation is the key to an evolving economy and focuses on young executive empowerment through the supply of knowledge, mentorship and providing a practical guide to overcoming business hurdles.

Yannick Nzonde

18-year-old youth activist, social entrepreneur, public speaker and 2019’s Global Teen Leader, Amonge Sinxoto, is an authentically African creative with a burning desire to represent what she feels it means to be an African youth in the 21st century. As the co-founder of Blackboard Africa, a youth Non-Profit Company, Amonge is at the forefront of driving the narrative of the continent into a new direction. As a leader and young ambassador of national reformation, Amonge has been invited by global platforms such as TEDx, Google and Facebook amongst others, to lend her voice to key discussions around youth and she has already fulfilled speaking engagements on three continents.

Amonge Sinxoto

Manqoba is a passionate, adventurous, self-driven and resourceful individual. He is always keen for a challenge and always looking for ways to increase his skill set and broaden his knowledge base. It was Neale Donald Walsch who said, “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone”. Those are the words that Manqoba truly lives by as he view's life as a journey towards ones purpose and the fulfilment of our true potential.

Isaac Shongwe is the founder and Chairman of Letsema. Isaac completed his university education at Wesleyan University in the United States. Isaac became the second black South African to be awarded a Rhodes Scholarship in 1989, having worked at Barlorand in 1988. Isaac joined Monitor Consulting in 1993 and founded Letsema in 1996. An exceptional communicator, manager and business professional, Isaac is passionate about business being a catalyst for social change. Isaac is Deputy Chairperson of the Wits University Council.

Isaac Shongwe

AS a 12-year-old boy, Yanesh Naidoo sold eggs and curry leaves to earn pocket money. Later, he moonlighted as a DJ to finance his B.Sc. Engineering studies in Mechatronics at the University of Cape Town. Today, as Jendamark’s director of sales and design, he has a much more interesting product to offer – the ever-evolving technology landscape of Industry 4.0. Today, he continues to identify opportunities for accelerated growth and aims to stay ahead of industry requirements by developing software solutions and using technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality to create industry-leading assembly facilities.

A software engineer, Muhammad Simjee abandoned a safe career with global management consultants, McKinsey & Co, to found A2D24. His dream? To find pragmatic, affordable technology solutions to the world’s most pressing social and economic challenges. Today, Simjee leads a team that produces ground-breaking innovations that save lives and disrupt markets. An A2D24 innovation currently helps millions of patients receive their medication on time.

Muhammad Simjee

Annu is an Electronics and Communication engineer and a certified Pragmatic Marketing (PMC) professional. Annu has 20 years experience in the technology sector; she started her career as a software developer. She later transitioned to technology product management and worked for a number of companies ranging from innovative startups to established corporates. In 2018, she was elected as one of the fifty most inspiring South African women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Annu Augustine

The Founder and CEO of Agile Ventures Holdings which is an Angel Investment and Venture Capital company investing in Disruptive Technology ventures including FinTech, Analytics, IoT, Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain initiatives throughout the world. He is involved in several ventures including LaybyCafe (FinTech), SecureLend (blockchain), REM Enterprises (telco services), Verestent (logistics), MP Analytics (data analytics), Omnipresent Global (drone tech/IOT), NoaVR (AR/VR) and has angel investments in a variety of other disruptive and FinTech applications.

Raj Wanniappa

Strategist, an innovator and Visionary Leader. Tabassum Qadir is the CEO of Uprise.Africa (First Equity Crowdfunding Platform of Africa ) & The former chair of Skywise Airline that she co-founded as a 100% female owned low-cost airline 2014.

Tabassum Qadir

An early stage/angel investor, providing both financial and advisory capital. He headed up Africa's leading youth insight and activation agency, HDI Youth Marketeers, for eight years. Before that he had started ELEVATION (in 2006), which did then, and is again now, doing exciting things in the start-up space. V2.0 of Elevation kicked off with a research report launched in 2017 on how the SA start-up ecosystem could leapfrog. He has over 15 years’ experience in entrepreneurship & management, and 20 years in marketing.

Jason Levin

A South African national with over twelve years of professional experience and an MBA from Europe’s top business school (FT Rankings). Following nine years in asset management, Abu has gone on to start three businesses. He also chairs his family’s investment board.Abu has lived in South Africa, the UAE and Spain. His mindset has been shaped by diverse experiences and he would like to see the South African entrepreneurship ecosystem prosper.Having grown up in a family business, entrepreneurship is in his blood. He founded Ground Flr, an online platform that sources capital from developed markets and places it with emerging market startups.

Abu Cassim

Vuyisa Qabaka is a Partner at Pan African innovation firm, HYBR Group and co-founder at equity crowdfunding platform Uprise.Africa. Has spent the past 8 years building venture, building ecosystem, in media as television host and business columnist. He Has travelled globally on investment roadshows with various African startups including economic study tours top innovation ecosystems like Nigeria, Kenya, Malaysia and Israel. A qualified lean start-up trainer, start-up and small business advisor, investor and capital fundraiser. Has previously worked on setting up creative business strategies and innovation hubs, consults at executive committee level, with a focus on offbeat social initiatives, ecosystem development, and bringing disruptive market positioning.

Vuyisa Qabaka

An independent legal consultant focussing on innovation, intellectual property, technology, and privacy law. Growing frustrated by living her life one billable hour to the next, Sinal left her job as a Senior Associate at one of the world's largest law firms to start her own consultancy, Khanyetsa, in November 2017 and joined the team at d8amatiks in June 2018.

Sinal Govender

Portfolio/Investment Manager who has built from scratch three separate asset management businesses. He has experience in identifying investment opportunities in listed and venture capital spheres. He has also build a industry first venture capital platform that helps match high net worth investors and family office clients with suitable venture capital investment opportunities.

James Twidale

Robyn began her career in the Health and Fitness industry having started her own business which was later sold to the Virgin Group. After spending 4 years within the corporate industry - Robyn initiated a pivot within her career to pursue a more transformative role, not just within people's lives, but within corporate business. Robyn went on to win the G20 Global Business Challenge to solve World Hunger by 2030 setting out new strategies for Protein production in Africa. Solving important problems with people at the centre of resolution, Robyn pursued a Masters at ESADE Business School in Barcelona to specialise in Design Thinking and Strategic Business Transformation.

Robyn Moore

Partner Market Executive for China and responsible for value-add and management of Discovery's 25% investment in Ping An Health, the largest comprehensive health insurer in China. He initially joined Discovery as the Chief of Staff to Barry Swartzberg, the Co-Founder of Discovery and CEO of Vitality Group, the international division of Discovery covering 17 markets outside South Africa and the UK. In this role, he provided strategic guidance to the Vitality Group ExCo and led multiple strategic projects across the business including the development of Vitality Group's strategies for the US and China. Prior to joining Vitality Group, he worked for McKinsey & Company advising companies within the banking, telecoms, consumer packaged goods and mining industries.

Sizwe Thandukwazi Nxumalo

Student entrepreneur creating a vital resource for young people that are trying to make a better life in Africa. The problem she's trying to solve? Safety. Xabiso relates how she came from a dusty town in the Eastern Cape to creating a tech company that will enable young folks in South Africa to carry on with their lives without the pervasive feeling of helplessness in the face of crime while studying. A Tech entrepreneur with a passion of inspiring a girl child to go for their dreams.

Xabiso Lombo

Themba is a Founder and Executive Director of Discovery Insure Ltd, a Short-term Insurance Company launched in 2011. He joined Discovery in 2001 working on numerous initiatives where his role ultimately led to his 10-year vision launch of Discovery Insure. Themba is a Member of the Board of Directors in the following organisations:- Institute of Insurance of South Africa (IISA); Henley Business School Academic Board; South African Insurance Association (SAIA); Deputy Chair of South African Insurance Crime Bureau (SAICB). In 2003 he co-founded Black Insurance Professionals of Southern Africa (BIPSA). He was awarded the Green Number in 2012 (for obtaining Ten Comrades Marathon-89.9kms Medals).

Themba Baloyi

Professor and founding director of the Allan Gray Centre for Leadership Ethics. Prof Tabensky develops and run an ethics course, named IiNtetho zoBomi (conversations about life in isiXhosa, the language of Mandela), targeted primarily at university students from all disciplines and high school students. This is by no means a standard ethics course and it has taken five years to develop into what it is today

Prof. Pedro Tabensky

A business and life strategist. He is the director for Startup Grind South Africa and the CEO and founder of Africa Trust Academy, a coaching and consulting company. Sandras has worked with over 25 organisations and has lectured at over 15 universities including University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University and Oxford. His work has taken him to 21 countries including Silicon Valley USA, Hong Kong, India, Mexico and France. Some of the organisations served include Sanlam, General Electric, Big Brother Africa, McKinsey & Co, The Foschini Group and the African Union. Sandras has a degree in Computer Science and an MBA from UCT.

Sandras Phiri

Co-founder and executive director of Gradesmatch. Gradesmatch is an educational technology platform that uses advanced analytics to assists high school learners with career planning in preparing them for the future. His educational background is in finance and engineering where he specialized in machine learning applications in real world scenarios. He is passionate about the development of young people and seeing them achieve their potential.

Lebo Diale

Learning and Development Specialist. She has a particular interest in in creating epistemologies for African entrepreneurial and leadership development. In 2016, Nizenande was published as a featured author alongside former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela, in a book titled: "Inspired: Remarkable South Africans Share their Stories." In 2017 Nizenande was appointed as a Member of the Eminent Persons’ Group (EPG) for Transformation in Sport by the Minister of Sport. She was recently elected as a fellow on the Zanele Mbeki Fellowship; a feminist leadership programme for leading African women.

Nizenande Machi

Experienced Founding Editor with a demonstrated history of working in innovation consulting, media production, and technology startup industries. Bridgette was then seconded to the private sector to work with Fluor Daniel Engineers as a Cost Engineer on the US$1 billion Secunda Natural Gas project on behalf of Sasol. Nirojan Poovendran, also known as “Nitro” is a Partner at Letsema Consulting & Advisory, a Sub-Saharan Management Consultancy providing business turnaround and advisory solutions primarily in the transport, energy, mining and government sectors.
